Martino: Vini merits Ballon d’Or, Messi still best

Inter Miami coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino has said he believes Vinícius Júnior deserves to win the Ballon d’Or award but still considers Lionel Messi to be “the best” player in the world.

Vinícius, 24, enjoyed a superb season at Real Madrid and, along with Manchester City midfielder Rodri, is one of the top candidates to pick up the distinguished individual trophy in Monday’s ceremony in Paris.

“It [the Ballon d’Or] has never been something that caught my attention, nor was it clear to me whether the award is for the best in the world or of the year,” Martino said.

“Vinícius Júnior probably has the merit [of being the best last season], although if you ask me who is the best right now, it’s Messi.”

Vinicius scored 24 goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions for LaLiga champions Madrid, including his team’s second goal in last season’s Champions League final win against Borussia Dortmund.

Messi, 37, was omitted from the nominations for the prize for the first time since 2003.

The Argentina captain has won it a record eight times in his career.

Miami’s veteran defender Jordi Alba said he was surprised his former Barcelona teammate was not considered for this year’s honour.

“I have never given much importance to the Ballon d’Or, but for me Leo always has to be there,” Alba said. “He continues to make a difference, he is the best in the world without a doubt when being at the highest level.”

Messi is among the finalists for Major League Soccer’s MVP award for this season.

He is considering the leading candidate having scored 20 goals and provided 16 assists in just 19 games.
