Messi: Miami will ‘come back stronger next year’

Lionel Messi vowed to “come back stronger” in 2025, following Inter Miami‘s elimination for the 2024 Major League Soccer playoffs on Saturday night at Chase Stadium.

The Herons fell 3-2 to Atlanta United FC in the final match of the Round 1 best-of-three playoff series as goals from Jamal Thiaré and Bartosz Slisz forced an end to Miami’s historic season.

“A season ended in which we continued to grow as a club and, although we achieved some goals, we wanted more,” Messi said on Instagram. “Thanks to all the people who joined and supported us. Now let’s get ready to come back stronger next year.”

The Argentine forward concluded the regular season with 20 goals and 16 assists in just 19 games, helping Inter Miami clinch the 2024 Supporters’ Shield and set the league record for most points recorded in a single campaign.

He is expected to return next season, as his current contract with Inter Miami lasts through the 2025 campaign.

“I actually don’t know how limited [Messi’s time in this league] is,” Martino said following the team’s elimination. “There is a question of time passing, but I would not dare to say that it is so short.”

Inter Miami now heads into the months-long offseason, shifting focus on the current roster and preparing for the various tournaments of 2025.

In addition to the regular season, the team will participate in the Concacaf Champions Cup, Leagues Cup and Club World Cup.

FIFA awarded Inter Miami with the final Concacaf slot to the tournament after winning the Supporters’ Shield, joining MLS‘ other participants, Seattle Sounders.

Concacaf received an additional invite to the tournament given that the United States will serve as host of the Club World Cup.

Other participants include Manchester City (2022-23 Champions League winners) and Real Madrid (2021-22 and 2023-24 Champions League Winners).

The draw to determine the groups and fixtures will take place on Dec. 5 in Miami, as FIFA prepares for the inaugural 32-team edition of the Club World Cup.
