A live-action movie based on Nintendo’s immensely successful The Legend of Zelda franchise has been in development for some time, and today the worldwide release date has been confirmed as March 26, 2027.

The announcement came by way of the new Nintendo Today app, available on Google Play and the App Store. The app was announced during March 27’s Nintendo Direct presentation, and was released the same day, promising a direct stream of news on Nintendo’s various games, attractions and movies. Fans that downloaded the app immediately were treated to the exclusive announcement of the worldwide release date Friday morning.

The film was first announced in November 2023, with Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment co-financing the project, and the latter handling worldwide distribution. Series creator and acclaimed game developer Shigeru Miyamoto is a producer on the project, alongside Avi Arad, who is best known for working on the Spider-Man movie franchise and 2022’s “Uncharted” starring Tom Holland.

The release date is still two years away, and the brief teaser doesn’t reveal anything more than the fact that we will see a global release date for the film in all regions. Nintendo is stated to be heavily involved with the plot and direction of the film.

The Legend of Zelda isn’t the first Nintendo property to make its way to the big screen. Detective Pikachu — starring Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith — made $433 million at the box office in 2019. That success is dwarfed by 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie — starring Chris Pratt, Jack Black, and more — which earned $1.363 billion at the box office, making it one of the top 20 highest-grossing movies of all time.
