UT Reveals Smokey Mascot’s Identity: Connor Solsbee, Walker Valley Alum
For the first time in nearly 50 years, the University of Tennessee has revealed the student behind its beloved costumed mascot, Smokey.
Connor Solsbee, a senior biomedical engineering major from Etowah and graduate of Walker Valley High School, shared his story in Torchbearer magazine.
After overcoming Burkitt lymphoma as a teen, Solsbee was inspired to pursue biomedical engineering. He joined UT in 2021 and, with encouragement from friends, tried out for the Spirit Program—eventually becoming Smokey.
Over the next three and a half years, he brought energy and spirit to countless games and events. Solsbee says the experience shaped him in unforgettable ways.
