SPRING FLING: Baseball, soccer, and softball scores from Wednesday

Weather had something to do with the Spring Fling having to rearrange their schedule a bit. This just meant more baseball and softball on Wednesday.

Results involving our area teams are below.

BASEBALL:

Whitwell was making its Spring Fling debut in the 1A bracket against McKenzie. The Tigers opt to not go with their ace in Jacob McCurry on the mound in their opener. It may have proved costly.

The Rebels built a 3-0 lead before the Tigers finally plated a run in the bottom of the sixth. McKenzie then put the game away with three insurance runs in the top of the seventh to win 6-1.

Whitwell now must play their way through the loser's bracket to stay alive. The Tigers will take on Bradford on Thursday at 11 a.m. ET at Wilson Central High School in Lebanon, TN.

SOCCER:

Boyd-Buchanan had their sights set on back-to-back state championships and a third straight appearance in the title match. Their state semifinal match with Knoxville Grace needed overtime. An OT match the Bucs would lose 1-0, ending their hopes of consecutive titles.

McCallie had a much different result. The Blue Tornado made swift work of previously undefeated Ensworth for a 5-1 win in DII-AA. McCallie will play for a second straight state title on Thursday when they take on MBA at 5 p.m. ET.

SOFTBALL:

In DII-A, Silverdale has a chance to three-peat. A quest that was nearly derailed early. The Lady Seahawks lost 10-0 to DCA to open the day. They followed up the loss with an 8-0 win over CAK and a 6-4 victory over USJ to advance to the title game.

Silverdale will rematch with DCA. The Lady Seahawks will have to beat them twice to capture their third consecutive state championship. Game one begins at 1:30 p.m. ET at MTSU.

In DII-AA, Baylor and CCS set up what felt like an inevitable winner's bracket semifinal game with wins to start the day. The Lady Red Raiders beat Lipscomb Academy 8-4 while the Lady Chargers defeated St. Benedict 4-2.

An early 1-0 CCS lead turned into a 6-1 Baylor lead with a monster fifth inning by the nine-time defending champs. The Lady Chargers would then rise to the occasion to take back the lead with a big inning of their own in the sixth. CCS closed out the 8-6 victory to advance to the state championship game.

Baylor then had to turn around and play St. Benedict in an elimination game. A game that turned sour quick. A 12-run second inning doomed the Lady Red Raiders. St. Benedict only needed five innings to end Baylor's chances at a tenth straight title with a 14-0 win.

Meanwhile, CCS will now take on St. Benedict in the state championship game. The Lady Chargers will have two chances to win, if needed. They'll play on Thursday at 11 a.m. ET at MTSU. One win and CCS will claim their first softball state title in school history.

Walker Valley got to the Spring Fling in dramatic fashion with a 1-0 walk-off win in extra innings in their sectional game. In Murfreesboro, things have gone a bit different.

The Feisty Fillies capitalized on a flurry of Page mistakes to beat the Lady Pats 8-1 in their opener. They would follow that up with a 6-3 victory over Rossview.

The Lady Mustangs now control their own destiny to the state championship game. They'll have at least two chances to get there, if needed. They'll play again on Thursday at 12 p.m. (ET) against the winner of Page and Rossview. Walker Valley only needs one more win to clinch a spot in the title game.
