MLB Makes Historic Investment in Women's Sports with Launch of Athletes Unlimited Softball League

Major League Baseball (MLB) has announced a landmark investment in the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL), marking its first major financial commitment to a women's professional sports league. This strategic partnership aims to elevate professional softball and expand opportunities for female athletes nationwide.
A Historic Partnership
MLB has acquired over a 20% equity stake in the AUSL, which is set to launch its inaugural season on June 7, 2025. The league will feature four teams—the Bandits, Talons, Blaze, and Volts—competing in 24 games across 10 U.S. cities, culminating in a championship series in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, from July 26 to 28.
As part of the partnership, MLB will provide extensive support, including broadcasting select AUSL games on MLB Network and MLB.TV, joint marketing efforts, and promotional activities during MLB events such as the All-Star Game and postseason.
Leadership and Vision
The AUSL is led by Commissioner Kim Ng, who previously made history as the first female general manager in MLB with the Miami Marlins. Ng emphasized the personal significance of this initiative, stating, "These women will now have the opportunity to play year after year for 10, 15 years past college, just like the guys."
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred highlighted the importance of this investment, noting that it reflects MLB's commitment to supporting the growth of softball and creating more opportunities for women and girls in sports.
Looking Ahead
The AUSL plans to transition to a city-based league format in 2026, aiming to establish a sustainable and impactful presence in the professional sports landscape. With MLB's backing, the league seeks to provide long-term career opportunities for female athletes and inspire the next generation of softball players.MLB.com+9SBNation.com+9New York Post+9AP News
