New Coach Chris Brown Leads Cleveland Blue Raiders into Season Opener Against Walker Valley
CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Cleveland High School Blue Raiders are set to kick off their 2025 football season Thursday night in a cross-town rivalry showdown against Walker Valley — and they’ll do it under the direction of new head coach Chris Brown.
Brown, a veteran on the sidelines but in his first year with Cleveland, says his team is eager to take the field after months of preparation. “It’s always special to see football kick off in this region,” Brown said during an interview on ESPN Cleveland 101.3. “We’re excited to turn it loose, see where we are, and then see where we can grow.”
The Blue Raiders wrapped up their preseason with a challenging scrimmage at Boyd Buchanan, facing a squad led by legendary coach Gary Rankin. Brown said the matchup provided valuable experience against the kind of size and speed his team hopes to see deep in the postseason.
Joining Brown in the studio were junior quarterback Casey McGowan and senior two-way standout Emilio Green. McGowan expressed enthusiasm about the season and adapting to a new offensive system. “It’s been a work in progress, but we’re getting to where we need to be,” he said. “I think we’re going to be just as good offensively as we were last year.”
For McGowan, opening night against Walker Valley is more than just the first game. “They’re a great team, we’re a great team, and there’s going to be a lot of people there. Who doesn’t want to play in front of a big crowd?”
Green, who plays outside linebacker, nickel, and slot receiver, said he’s savoring his senior year. “It’s flown by,” he said. “I’m just going to take every moment and soak it in. The friendships I’ve made through football and track are ones I’ll have forever.”
Brown praised both players for their leadership. “They set the example for our team,” he said. “We’re hoping to continue to grow together and be the best versions of ourselves by the playoffs.”
Thursday night’s contest marks the inaugural ESPN Cleveland 101.3 Community Kickoff, a new tradition celebrating local high school football rivalries. The game will air live on Mix 104.1 and stream on MixTV.tv, with television coverage presented by Mountain View Nissan of Cleveland and radio coverage sponsored by Wholesale Supply Group.
Kickoff is set for Thursday evening at Cleveland High School.
