Tennessee Football names Joey Aguilar starting quarterback for 2025 season

Tennessee Football posted a photo of Joey Aguilar with that caption on X on Sunday night, indicating that the senior will officially be the Vols starting quarterback come Aug. 30.
The news comes four months after former starter Nico Iamaleava transferred to UCLA. His replacement, Aguilar, spent the spring with the Bruins before transferring to Tennessee.
The move doesn't come as much of a surprise, as Aguilar was the most seasoned candidate, beating out redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger and true freshman and Tennessee native George MacIntyre.
In his two years at Appalachian State, Aguilar compiled over 7200 yards of total offense, with 56 touchdowns.
Head Coach Josh Heupel has said throughout camp how impressed he has been with Aguilar's ability to learn the playbook in such a short amount of time.
At SEC Media Days, tight end Miles Kitselman told us, "I don't think we could have asked for a better dude."
Tennessee opens the season on Aug. 30 in Atlanta against Syracuse.
