Voice of the Bulldogs Scott Howard Interview

Jul 10, 2025

CLEVELAND, TN — In a wide-ranging and candid interview aired Wednesday on ESPN Cleveland, Scott Howard—the longtime radio voice of Georgia Bulldogs football—joined host Jim to discuss his broadcasting journey, memorable Georgia football moments, and recent recognition as a 2025 inductee into the Friends of Georgia Radio Hall of Fame.

Howard, who has been the lead play-by-play announcer for the Bulldogs since 2008, took listeners through his early love for radio growing up in Nashville and Georgia. He detailed his path from working at Delta Airlines to landing his first on-air role in middle Georgia, despite challenges at the beginning. That experience laid the foundation for a career that would eventually bring him to Athens and into the legendary Larry Munson’s broadcast booth.

“What really got me into it was wanting to be the guy in the box,” Howard shared. “I had a love for music and sports. Radio let me do both.” He later added that working alongside Munson from 1993 until Munson’s retirement in 2008 was one of the most formative chapters in his career.

Howard also shared his broadcasting philosophy, including the importance of resetting the score and situation frequently for new listeners. “That’s Sports Broadcasting 101,” he emphasized. “Drives me crazy when I get in the car and still don’t know the score ten minutes later.”

Reflecting on his favorite games, Howard pointed to the 2018 Rose Bowl win over Oklahoma and Georgia’s back-to-back national championship victories in 2021 and 2022. He also recalled historic moments like the famous 2001 “hobnail boot” win over Tennessee during his years with Munson—drawing a humorous reaction from Tennessee fans listening in.

Asked about his favorite stadiums, Howard admitted that while most SEC venues have modern press boxes, a few—like Auburn—offer less-than-ideal broadcast angles. “Their booth is in the end zone, and that’s a tough place to call a game,” he noted.

The conversation shifted to upcoming changes in college football scheduling and the future of the Georgia-Florida rivalry, which is relocating to neutral sites in Atlanta and Tampa during Jacksonville’s stadium renovations in 2026–2027. Howard suggested financial incentives likely drove the decision. “There’s a lot of money involved,” he said. “You’re essentially hosting a bowl game during the regular season.”

As he looks forward to another season on the air, Howard expressed gratitude for the honor of calling Georgia games and emphasized his enthusiasm for what’s ahead. “We’ve got a great crew, and we have a lot of fun. I just try to get the score right and enjoy it.”

Listeners can catch Scott Howard and Georgia Bulldogs football all season long on ESPN Cleveland.
